Garden Pavilion

Location:

San Francisco, CA

Description:

Built on a complicated site on the edge of an urban cliff, this Garden Pavilion was designed to provide a garage for the main residence (a remodeled fisherman’s cottage located back up the hill) as well as an intimate space for entertaining within an existing landscaped garden setting.   A new garage was built into the side of the cliff with new, deeply footed retaining walls and a complicated new drainage system to allow natural underground flow in the hill.   Atop the garage sits a new garden pavilion based upon a medieval European dovecote or “pigeonnier”, an aviary structure designed to house semi-wild birds.  The height of the structure and its orientation towards the existing garden create an oasis of urban privacy and both visually and aurally screen this area from neighboring properties and street traffic.  A new, attractive and secure sidewalk entry gate was designed and the garage contains a separate, private entry up to the residence.
